Step 1 Lesson 1: Why Go Online?
"WHY GO ONLINE?"

Ask 10 people and you'll likely get 10 different answers! Venturing on to the Internet, you can (for starters):

  • send and receive mail.

  • "talk" to people who share your interests.

  • shop!

  • find answers to even the most obscure questions.

  • invest money.

  • make travel arrangements.

  • locate old friends -- and make new ones - from Maine to Timbuktu.

  • visit museums all over the world.

  • access experts on health, ferrets, ancient Rome - anything.

  • listen to music.

  • display your own interests on your personal Web page.

  • play games.

  • give to your favorite charity.

  • FIND AND MAKE FRIENDS

Find old friends through the numerous directories and services. (Why, you could even get found yourself!) Aside from sending e-mail messages to long-lost pals, you'll find yourself making new "cyberpals" through newsgroups, chats and message boards.

    LEARN ABOUT, WELL, ANYTHING!

Perhaps you want to know more about that rather large, mysterious and worrisome beetle you just saw in the basement. Online you've got encyclopedias, educational institutions, newsgroups, experts, and a wealth of Web sites to assist you. By conducting a search you'll be sure to find whatever you're looking for - in spades!

MAKE, MANAGE, AND SPEND MONEY WISELY

Shopping online is easy, safe, and can save you a ton of dough. You can even make travel arrangements right at your computer. Compare prices, schedules, and discover whose bed-and-breakfast has better beds and breakfasts.

While you're spending, you might also look to manage your money better. Thanks to the Internet, you can do your banking and investing online in the privacy of your home.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU

Enjoy yourself. View artwork and listen to music. Yes, it's true. You can see classic artwork by the masters, or artifacts like classic Pez dispensers. You can listen to music by YoYo Ma, or visit the yo-yo museum. Playing games online is fun, too. You can find anything from chess, to bridge, to other multi-user games.

Creating your own web page isn't that hard to do. And you can let the whole world read your poetry, see your handmade jewelry, or hear how those ukulele lessons are coming along.

Now that we've whetted your appetite, use the Oprah Goes Online mini-lessons and community resources to feast upon all the Internet has to offer! And from all of us here online: Welcome!
