Every time you access a page on the Web, you are taking information from that Web site's computer -- a server -- and temporarily putting it on your own computer. Most of the time, you'll just use and enjoy the contents of a Web page during just that online session. But sometimes you'll want to save what you found so you can use it again without having to get online again.
For example, you might want to send a poem to someone as an e-mail attachment, for example, or save a picture or sound file.
Here's how to save things you find on the Web:
|
 |

SAVING TEXT

If you want to save sections or parts of text:

1. Highlight the text you want to save

2. Copy the text using the Edit menu

3. Paste the text into a word-processing document.
If you want to save an entire page of text:

1. Go to the File menu

2. Select "Save As"

3. If you want to rename the page, now's your chance

4. Choose where you want to save the page -- probably in a folder on your desktop

5. When you want to see the file again, drag it from where you saved it into your Web browser. Or simply double click on it!
Note: Images may not be displayed on the page that you've saved. You haven't done anything wrong, it's just an HTML thing. To save images on a Web page, see below.
If you want to print a whole page:

1. Go to the File menu

2. Select "Print" (Now that was hard, wasn't it?)
Newer browsers give you the option of sending a Web page to an e-mail address.

If you want to send or e-maila page:

1. Go to the File menu

2. Select "Send Page"

3. Fill in the recipient's e-mail address and any message

4. Click "send," and go back to that Web page.

Saving Graphics

1. Click on the image you want to save.

2. Hold down the mouse. You should see a pop up menu box.

3. From the menu, choose "Save Image As..."

4. Choose where you want to save the image -- probably in a folder on your desktop

5. When you want to use the image again drag it from where you saved it into your Web browser, or double click on the image file and choose a program to view the image.

Saving Multimedia (Audio and Video)

1. Go to the File pull-down menu

2. Select "Save As"

3. A dialog box will pop up asking where you want to save the file

4. Choose a destination for the file

5. When you want to listen to the file again, drag it into your audio player (probably QuickTime or RealPlayer) or double click on the file and pick a program to play it.
Note: Some of the audio and video clips that you'll come across are what is called streaming. This means that you can listen to or see it while it's downloading on your computer, instead of having to wait for the whole thing to download, which could take a long time. Streaming video and audio are not meant to be saved.

HEY, IS THIS LEGAL?

Copyright laws to apply to the content of Web pages, so don't use
saved files - text, audio or images -- for anything other than your personal use without first getting appropriate permissions from a page's authors.
