Step 1 Lesson 17: Online With America Online
AOL is an online service provider that provides its 20 million paying subscribers with unlimited access to the Internet and World Wide Web as well as to its own online content ranging from games, to world news to shopping.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ON AOL?

  • Find something for everyone on the AOL "Channels" (see below)

  • Send and receive e-mail and Instant Messages

  • Know when your buddies are online

  • Join an online chat

  • Publish your own Web site

  • Shop for your favorite brands
AOL offers a wide range of its own content, from Health and Travel to Entertainment and Shopping. You can use AOL SearchSM to find whatever it is you might be looking for on either AOL or the internet.

  • USING KEYWORDS

Using "Keywords" can also help you find what you want. Think of Keywords as shortcuts to both AOL and Web content. For example, Keyword: Oprah will link you to Oprah Winfrey's Web site. Keyword: Destination lets you discover other cities and get travel information.

SENDING AND RECEIVING E-MAIL ON AOL

is easy. You can store and organize your friend's e-mail addresses in the Address Book, save your mail in your Personal Filing Cabinet, even retrieve recently deleted e-mail if you're using the latest version - AOL 5.0.

    INSTANT MESSENGERSM

The AOL Instant MessengerSM feature lets you get in touch with someone else online...instantly! If you receive an Instant Message, it'll pop up on your screen. To send an Instant Message, use the Keyword: IM and type your message. Remember to add your friends' names to your Buddy List® so you'll know when they're online and you can send them Instant Messages.

    CHAT

And then there's AOL Chat, where you can meet and talk in real time to other members of AOL. You'll find "Chats" and communities of people who share your interests in "People Connection" - the place where it all started. To enter this area, click the People icon on your toolbar. From there, click on the Chat Now! button.

    AOL HOMETOWNSM

Want to publish your own Web site? AOL HometownSM is where you can do just that. AOL HometownSM not only gives you space for your Web site, they even provide the software you need to do your own Web publishing.

    SHOPPING

Shopping on AOL is also super easy and always backed by the AOL Guarantee. Start at the Shopping Channel and you'll find brand name stores as well as interesting specialty shops.

    AOL HELP 24-7

Perhaps the nicest thing about America Online is their 24 hour,7 day a week support. Simply go to Keyword: Help, or Keyword: QuickStart, and you'll have all the information you need to make the most of what America Online has to offer!
